LECTURE

TOPIC 1:  Contrast and Gestalt Theory

Visual communication is about utilizing design to convey purposeful message to the target audience.

Elements of Design:

  • Point: Point is the simplest element of design, a repetitive mark forms a line , and point moves in space.

  • Line: Line is can expressed a bunch of meaning depends on their patterns.
  • Shape: Shape could form in 2D area or 3D object, visible depending on their apparent in color, lightness and texture.
  • Form: Form is a 2D area and a  3D area, 2D area examples are painting, illustration or drawing while 3D examples is sculptors.
  • Texture: Texture are refers to tactile qualities of surfaces.

  • Space : Space is an empty space around us just like in drawings, paintings, prints and others.

  • Colour : Colour are refers to lightness or darkness.

 Principles of Design:

  • Contrast
  • Balance
  • Emphasis
  • Rules of third
  • Repetition / Pattern / Rhythm
  • Movement
  • Hierarchy
  • Alignment
  • Harmony
  • Unity
  • Proportion

-Gestalt Theory

  • Gestalt principles are rules that describe hoe human eye recognize visual elements.
  • The principles aim is to show how complex scenes can be reduced to more simple shapes
  • These also explain how the eyes perceive shapes as a single, united form rather than separate simpler elements

- Contrast

  • Contrast is the juxtaposition of strongly dissimilar elements. Without contrast, visual experience would be monotonous.
  • Contrast can provide visual interest, emphasise a point and express content.

-Principle of Similarity

  • Human eye perceive similar elements in a design as a complete picture, shape or group.
  • Brain most likely to craft a link between elements of a similar nature

-Principle of Continuation

  • Human eye follows paths, lines, and curves of design and would rather watch a continuous flow of visual elements than separated objects.

-Principle of Closure

  • Human eye prefers to see complete shapes

-Principle of Proximity

  • This is a process for ensuring related to design elements that are placed together. Close proximity holds a meaning that items have connections or relationship and becoming one visual unit help to organize or give the layout structures

-Principles of figure/ground

  • Objects are instinctively perceived as being in the foreground or background.

-Law of symmetry & order

  • This law claims that elements are symmetrical to each other are distinguished as a unified group.

Topic 2 : Balance & Emphasis

-Balances

  • Distribution of visual weight in a work of design

-Symmetrical Balance

  • Has an equal weight on equal sides of centrally

-Asymmetrical Balance

  • Unequal visual weight on each side
  • One side of composition have the a dominant element, could be balanced by more lesser focal points on the other side
  • More dynamic and interesting
  • More visual variety and more complex between the elements

-The Golden Ratio

  • This is known as phi in mathematical concept and a number identify as 1.618
  • Representative of perfect beauty
  • Guide to create visual balance in architecture and paintings
  • Used to bring Harmony, Balance, and Structure

-Rule of Thirds

  • Composition guidelines used to create more dynamism on design/photography/film/paintings
  • Divided evenly into thirds

-Emphasis

  • Used to create dominance and focus on a design work. Variety of Elements can be used to create emphasis.

Topic 3: Repetition & Movement

-Repetition
(Pattern and Rhythm)

  • Repetition make work of design seem active
  • Repetition of elements of design creates rhythm and pattern
  • Avoid monotony
  • Pattern increase visual excitement by enriching surface interest

-Movement

  • The path the eye follows whether its in, around, and through a composition
  • Motion or movement occurs when objects seem to be moving in visual image
  • Movement in visual image comes from shapes, forms, lines, and curves

Topic 4 : Harmony & Unity

-Harmony

  • Selection of elements that share common trait
  • Harmony becomes monotony without variety*
  • The sense of all the elements of our design fit together. For example, theme, aesthetic style and mood

-Unity

  • Repetition of particular elements in design like colors, shapes, or materials.
  • A sense of oneness
  • Play distinct roles in the way we experience design

-Scale and Proportion

  • Both are design elements that have to do with size
  • Size of one object in relation to the other objects in design or artwork
  • Parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object
  • Use to depict or distract the ideal of design

-Scale

  • Size and dimension of figures and forms relative to specific unit of measure
  • Determined in two ways, actual measurement and visual estimates based on comparison

-Proportion

  • Relationship of two or more elements in a composition
  • Compared in size, color, quantity, degree, setting, ratio

Topic 5 : Symbol, Word & Image

-Symbol

  • Sign, shape, or object used to represent something else
  • To provide or convey information

-Pictorial Symbols

  • Symbols that used image-related and simplified pictures

-Abstract Symbols

  • Symbols look like objects that represent but have less details

-Arbitrary Symbols

  • No resemblance to objects or ideas they represent
  • Made with specific meaning, based on geometric shapes and colours

-Word and Image

  • Vital part of design is imagery. That is why its important to use suitable and relevant images when designing
  • Choosing right words to deepen the meaning of design. Suitable typeface putting it in strategic positioning result in visual hierarchy and balance in design

Instruction

Description:
You are to explore the various design principles taught in the module and observe works of design to apply your knowledge.
All these must be documented in your blog.

Requirements:

1. In your Task 1 post in the blog, include this MIB.
Describe each of the design principles listed below and select suitable design examples to demonstrate your understanding.
Students are NOT ALLOWED to reuse the images from the lecture notes/videos. The examples and any information you borrow from other sources must credit the source.

Plagiarism in any way (p. 13 of MIB) will result in an F grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected to the policies of the University concerning academic misconduct. You shall also adhere to the guidelines and expectations for the responsible use of GenAI.

- Gestalt theory
- Contrast
- Emphasis
- Balance
- Repetition
- Movement
- Harmony & Unity
- Symbol
- Word and Image

1. Select an art/design work that piques your interest.

2. Upload the image of the art/design work (JPEG file, min. A4 size, 300dpi) in your Task 1 blogpost.

3. Beneath the image, include the credit line of the art/design work (title of art/design work, artist’s/designer’s name; year, size, medium of the art/design work and the source).

4. Explain, in a writeup of about 150-200 words in the Task 1 blogpost, why you chose that art/design work.

5. List and briefly describe the design principles you observed in that art/design work in the Task 1 blogpost.

6. Include the feedback that you received from your lecturer in the Task 1 blogpost.

WORK PROGRESS:
Discuss and show your progress to your lecturer to get approval each week.
Your weekly attendance will be marked upon consultation.

DESIGN:

Title: "Spiritual Destiny"
Source: "Pinterest"

The reason why I chose this particular art is because the symphony and the title of its art, it's really does match art and i kind of has a sense that can improve this artwork even more. The moment when i saw this artwork while scrolling through my feeds i knew I'd like it and decided that it would be my artwork for this project, because i saw a lot of prospect also in this picture

The Design principle that really stands out in this picture is symmetrical balance between those two koi fish. The harmony of this art is the splashing water surrounding the fish and the movement of the fish body anatomy. Although the scale of this design it's not the best but i think i can improve it a little bit more. water Emphasis as a sign that the fish is moving and splashing.
